The Walk: The App That Finally Made Me Listen To Pope Francis
Podcast: Play in new window | Download
A couple of years ago, I was in the Vatican on a Wednesday morning for the pope’s weekly audience. The sun was warm, I was still a bit sleepy and the pope was reading a text in Italian. My thoughts started to drift and my eyelids started to become heavy. Suddenly, the pope stopped reading, looked up from his papers and asked: “Are you all still awake?” The crowd began to laugh, probably because I wasn’t the only one who was sleepy that morning.
Pope Francis dropped his prepared speech in his lap, bent forward and said on a confidential tone into the microphone: “You see, this is why I always tell priests not to preach for more than 8 to 10 minutes”.
I have always struggled with this. My ADHD brain has trouble registering the passing of time, and I can completely lose myself in the story that I’m sharing. Great for long-form podcasts like my recent Catholic Insider audiotours in Rome, not so great for my parishioners sitting in uncomfortable pews on Sunday morning.
My New Year’s resolution therefore is to limit myself to 8 minutes when I’m preaching. And I came across an app that helps me visualize the passing of time while I’m preaching, called ‘Time Timer’. I tried it out this past Sunday, and the feedback from my parishioners surprised me.
I talk about it and about my other plans for this new year (including my availabilty as a social media coach) in this new episode of The Walk. If you are interested in my coaching plans, send me a message and I will keep you informed!

The Catholic Insider Is Back This Christmas!
Last week I was in Rome to record a new series of episodes for The Catholic Insider, a podcast that I have been hosting since February 2005. It was so much fun to return to my podcasting roots and to take my listeners with me as I visited the nativity scene on Saint Peter’s Square, to the Wednesday Audience with the Pope, to share the amazing history of the Tiber Island and to explore a number of historical sites and churches in the Eternal City!
The series will be available at a later date, but my $10 patrons already get early access to a new episode every day during the 12 days of Christmas!
If you would like to help me continue my mission in 2024 and give something extra for Christmas, this may be an opportunity to become a patron at the Sunshine Tier at Patreon.com/FatherRoderick

Rome is beautiful this time of year. The bars and restaurants are decorated with Christmas lights, and on Saint Peter’s Square this year’s nativity scene honors Saint Francis’ first initiative to visualize the story of Jesus’ birth 800 years ago. In this episode of The Walk, I explore the streets of Trastevere at night as I share with you my plans for 2024.
You can follow my stories in Rome by joining my Patreon Community for free or as a supporter at Patreon.com/FatherRoderick
At Christmas, $10 tier Patrons or higher will get early access to my brand new Catholic Insider podcast series that I’m producing during my stay in Rome.
